what is wort grant in the brewery lauter tun and its function
It is easy to pull wort from the lauter tun faster than the grain bed wants it to flow, when using a pump to move wort from the lauter tun to the kettle. It will compact the lauter tun false bottom and causing a stuck runoff. Aside from being a large pain, the stuck runoff can also damage the wort pump because magnetically coupled pumps can be damaged if run dry.
There are two traditional solutions to sovle this problem. One is to add a speed controller for the wort pump. But it is relative expensive. Another option is to install a ball valve on the outlet side of a centrifugal pump to restrict flow. However, ball valves can be difficult to use for fine-tuning liquid flow. A wort grant gives a perfect solution which is better than the two above.
A wort grant is simply a small tank that collects the wort from the lauter tun. The pump is connected directly to the wort grant instead of the lauter tun. Gravity gently pulls the wort from the lauter tun, thus minimizing compression of the grain bed. A float switch should be used to turn the pump on when the grant is full, thus freeing the brewer to tend to other things.
Along with the improvement of craft brewing request, most of the brewhouse design has take wort grant into consideration. Pump inverter, wort grant or ball valve are all solutions of avoiding vacuum pulling under the lauter tun false bottom.
